#CSESymposium24

The Fall Virtual Symposium is a two-day event hosted annually by CSE for scholarly publishing professionals of all experience levels. These virtual gatherings offer the opportunity to hear from thought leaders about industry trends, network with colleagues, and spark inspiration that can inform the activities at your own organization.

Purpose & Topics

This year’s CSE Virtual Fall Symposium, “Equity in Research Publication: Keeping Humans Front and Center,” is your ticket to ride along with us as we collectively reflect back on core issues, engage with peers & industry experts, energize ourselves & our teams, and put into motion tested practical solutions to the major burning issues shaping our industry.

Join us on November 19th (Tuesday) and 20th (Wednesday), from the comfort of your location, as we dive deep into 4 key topics of contention this year in individual extended discussions with seasoned moderators & renowned subject specialists. Don’t forget to indulge in your community resource guide after these sessions to take your newly found practice to the next theory!

Many of the hottest current debates in publishing may seem complicated, unconnected to direct day-to-day journal management or perhaps a “luxury item” for appropriately resourced publications to contemplate. The purpose of this meeting, however, is to strip back the complexity, ensure a firm grounding, relate the conversation to journals of all types and provide guidance to power an attendee's own policy development or have an informed conversation with editors, a society journal owner or staff at a publishing house.

Session Themes:
  • Are Ethics Geographically Equitable? Maintaining the Sanctity of the Published Scholarly Record.
  • AI Apocalypse: From Doom to Boom (in Equity) for Researchers, Editorial Offices, Publishers, & Readers
  • Global Equity: Critical Concerns & Potential Practical Solutions for and from our Asian Allies
  • About Time We Diversify the Reviewer Pools: Current Scenarios & Practical Solutions from Stakeholders in the Value-Chain
  • Transformative Agreements and Read and Publish Deals: An Emerging Twist in the Battle for Equitable Access to Scholarly Content

Schedule
All times are given in US Eastern Standard Time (EST).

Finally, it is time to resolve a challenge from time immemorial! Diversifying the reviewer pool solves concerns regarding finding reviewers, helps address issues of reviewer bias, & tackles issues surrounding a lack of inclusion. From an author perspective, perhaps diversifying review pools potentially improves the quality of reviews received.

Topic 4: Transformative Agreements and Read and Publishing Deals: An Emerging Twist in the Battle for Equitable Access to Scholarly Content

Moderator:

Angela Cochran (Vice President of Publishing, American Society of Clinical Oncology) [USA]

  • James Butcher (Consultant, Journalology) [UK]

Transformative agreements and read and publish deals represent an emerging business model that may shift how content is accessed and influence where authors may chose to publish. Embark on this journey with this session to explore the promise of “free” publication for researchers, proposed incentives and support, perceived benefiters (and potential losers), and shifting priorities for journals and societies. As the new deals become commonplace, how can you practically and enthusiastically embrace them to the advantage of your journal(s)? Join this discussion with industry commentators, researchers, publishers, society publishers and librarians.
