Purpose & Topics
The Fall Symposium format gives everyone the opportunity to learn and share collectively and collaboratively.

Each day will begin with a general session that no scholarly publishing professional will want to miss. Attendees will then choose a topic to focus on in the Didactic and Workgroup sessions. Didactic speakers will discuss their approach to the topic, highlighting challenges and opportunities to set the stage, then attendees can delve further into the topics in Workgroup discussions. By the end of the day, participants will walk away with actionable, implementable strategies and tactics to take back to their organizations.

Schedule
All times are given in US Eastern Daylight Time (EDT).

Tuesday, October 24: Fall Virtual Symposium Day 1

11am–12pm EDT General Session:
AI, Accessibility, and Research Integrity: Opportunities and Challenges
Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming scholarly publishing, with the potential to make research more accessible, ethical, and inclusive... along with the potential to amplify biases and raise serious research integrity issues. This session will explore the opportunities and challenges of AI for scholarly publishing, from the use of fine-tuned generative AI for research integrity, to transforming the research ecosystem into an accessible and inclusive place.
Welcome:

  • Shari Leventhal, CSE President; Executive Editor, American Society of Nephrology

Speakers:

  • Dr. Mohammad Hosseini, Northwestern University, Feinberg School of Medicine
  • Dr. Hong Zhou, Director of Intelligent Services Group, Wiley Partner Solutions

Moderator:

  • Amanda Ferguson, Director, Scientific Journals, Institute of Food Technologists

12:30–1:30pm EDT Didactic Sessions:
Didactic 1: Evolving Policies and Opportunities for Generative AI
A growing number of journals have strict instructions on the use of generative AI, while others are embracing it and recognizing opportunities to improve editorial and publishing processes. There's certainly value in generative AI tools. But there are risks as well. We will explore the many ways publishers and journals are reacting to the fast-moving world of AI.
Speakers:

  • Charlotte Haug, MD PhD, Executive Editor, NEJM AI
  • Stuart Leitch, Chief Technology Officer, Silverchair
  • Timothy McAdoo, Manager, APA Style, American Psychological Association
  • Annette Flanagin, Executive Managing Editor and Vice President of Editorial Operations, JAMA and the JAMA Network

Moderator:

  • Jill Jackson, Managing Editor & Publications Administrator, American College of Physicians

Didactic 2: AI and ML Tools that can be Used to Ensure Research Integrity
There are a number of tools that use artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) that can help publishers screen for research integrity issues. This session will examine three areas that are of major concern to scholarly publishers: submissions from paper mills, detection of manipulated and duplicate images, and the proliferation of retracted science. This session will examine each of these areas through the lens of three different organizations that have developed AI/ML tools used to combat fraud and ensure research integrity. The presenters will provide a general overview of the integrity challenges they are combatting, they will discuss industry initiatives that they have been involved with, and they will discuss the details of how their tools are being used today by publishers and others.
This session is sponsored by Turnitin

Wednesday, October 25: Fall Virtual Symposium Day 2

11am–12pm EDT General Session:
Large-scale Threats to Research Integrity
There are multiple threats to the integrity of the scientific record, such as paper mills that sell authorship on fake research papers, manipulation of images and data to either enhance or alter actual findings, citation rings where authors cite each other’s papers even when they are not relevant, and fraudulent peer reviewers who provide positive reviews in exchange for cash or other favors. Hear our experts discuss these issues and answer your questions.
Speakers:

  • Renee Hoch, Managing Editor, Publication Ethics, PLOS
  • Luigi Longobardi, Director, Publishing Ethics and Conduct, IEEE
  • Dr. Michael Pemberton, Professor, Georgia Southern University

Moderator:

  • Alexandra Kahler, Director, KGL Editorial

12:30–1:30pm EDT Didactic Sessions:
Didactic 3: Partnerships of Institutions and Journals in Scientific Integrity Issues: Viewpoints of Research Integrity Officers, Editors, and a Legal Advisor
Promoting and protecting the integrity of the research record is an essential and fundamental goal shared by institutions and journals. While both groups are equally committed to ensuring the reliability of all published data, interactions between the groups may be challenging in the context of research misconduct proceedings. A Working Group composed of senior, experienced US Research Integrity Officers (RIOs), journal editors, and publishing staff held a series of virtual meetings with the goal of improving transparency and collaboration between institutions and journals to better ensure the validity of the research record, allow earlier communications between the two groups, and raise author awareness for how journals manage and report potential research misconduct concerns. Along with RIOS and journal publishers, the panel will include a publication lawyer who will discuss legal risks journals may face during a research misconduct allegation and the need for journals to exercise caution during investigations.
Speakers:

  • Debbie Parrish, JD, Partner, Parrish Law Offices
  • Lauran Qualkenbush, Senior Director, Research Integrity and Training, Northwestern University
  • Christina Bennett, PhD, Assistant Director & Publisher, American Chemical Society
  • Patricia K. (Patty) Baskin, MS, Senior Director, Publications, American Academy of Neurology

Moderator:

  • Susan Garfinkel, PhD, Associate Vice President for Research Compliance and Research Integrity Officer, The Ohio State University

Didactic 4: Licensing Content: Navigating Permissions, Copyright, and Site License Agreements
Panelists discuss how publishers and authors can better navigate rights and permissions for their content in the landscape of site licensing agreements, text and data mining, and copyright regulations particularly with the advent of AI tools.
Speakers:

  • Aileen McHugh, Senior Associate Publisher, Director of Sales and Circulation, American College of Physicians
  • Elliott Hibbler, Head Librarian, Scholarly Communications, Boston College
  • Leslie Lansman, Global Permissions Manager/Director, SpringerNature; Chair Public Policy Committee, ALPSP
  • Lauren Tulloch, Vice President & Managing Director, Copyright Clearance Center
