Board of Directors Roles and Responsibilities
The CSE Board of Directors is responsible for steering the organization forward in a manner that reflects the interests of the membership. Board members provide leadership, a shared vision, a sense of mission, and are responsible for the fiscal health of CSE.
All Board Members listed above and all CSE volunteers serve in their own personal capacity. All opinions expressed are those of the volunteers and do not necessarily reflect the opinions or policies of the Council of Science Editors or the Editorial Board of Science Editor, or the volunteer’s employer.

Director |

| President-Elect |
Collaborating closely with the President and Executive Director, the President-Elect supports organizational initiatives, helps guide board discussions, and begins shaping future priorities. The President-Elect is also expected to chair or actively participate in committees and serve as a visible ambassador for the organization and its mission. Full Role Description |
| Vice President |
This role is the first stage in CSE’s four-year presidential succession track: Vice President → President-Elect → President → Immediate Past President. The Vice President supports the President and President-Elect, and may act on their behalf when they are unavailable. | Secretary |
The Secretary serves as the official record-keeper of the organization, coordinating the preparation, review, and distribution of board meeting minutes and maintaining CSE’s core organizational documents. In addition to fulfilling all responsibilities of a Board Member at Large, the Secretary ensures institutional knowledge is preserved, decisions are clearly documented, and communications related to Board activity are timely and professional. | Treasurer |
The Treasurer provides fiscal leadership, oversight, and guidance to ensure the financial health and integrity of CSE. In addition to the responsibilities of a Board Member at Large, the Treasurer collaborates with the Executive Director, Finance Committee, and Board to develop budgets, monitor revenue and expenses, and ensure compliance with legal and ethical financial practices. |
| Treasurer-Elect |
The Treasurer-Elect of the Council of Science Editors (CSE) is an elected officer of the Board of Directors who supports the current Treasurer and prepares to assume the role when the current Treasurer’s term ends. In addition to fulfilling all responsibilities of a Board Member at Large, the Treasurer-Elect shadows the current Treasurer, actively participates in finance-related board discussions, and becomes familiar with CSE’s financial structure, policies, and procedures.
