Panelists discuss how publishers and authors can better navigate rights and permissions for their content in the landscape of site licensing agreements, text and data mining, and copyright regulations particularly with the advent of AI tools.

Aileen McHugh is a seasoned professional with over three decades of experience in professional and scholarly publishing. Currently serving as the Senior Associate Publisher and Director of Sales and Circulation at the American College of Physicians (ACP), she manages institutional sales and marketing, circulation, licensing, and rights and permissions for Annals of Internal Medicine and other ACP publications.  With a track record of leadership roles, including Director of Project MUSE at The Johns Hopkins University Press and Executive VP at Scientific American Medicine, Aileen has managed diverse teams and overseen the development of prestigious journals and medical references.

Elliott Hibbler, Head Librarian, Scholarly Communications, Boston College

Elliott Hibbler is the Head Librarian, Scholarly Communications at Boston College. He provides advice and support on a number of publishing topics, including copyright, open access, author rights, author identity, journal submissions, licensing, and institutional repositories. He also administers Boston College’s Open Access Publishing Fund and its Institutional Repository. Prior to joining Boston College, Elliott was the Senior Law Librarian for Publishing Services at Northeastern University School of Law, and has taught at Simmons University and Suffolk University. He holds a J.D., an M.S. in Urban Informatics, and an M.S. in Information Science.

Leslie Lansman B.A., J.D, LL.M has over 20 years of experience across copyright & licensing in the creative industries and in both London and New York. Currently, she holds the position of Global Permissions Manager at Springer Nature. As a Director and Chair of the ALPSP Policy committee, she is avid in raising awareness around copyright issues and concerns.

Lauren Tulloch, Vice President & Managing Director, Copyright Clearance Center

As Vice President & Managing Director at CCC, Lauren is responsible for the Corporate Business Unit which includes copyright licenses, the RightFind product suite, and managed knowledge services. She held several product management leadership roles in the organization. Before joining CCC, Lauren served as a group publisher and editorial director at HCPro, a healthcare education & training company, where she was responsible for product development and strategy. Lauren began her career as a newspaper reporter and editor. She holds Bachelor’s degrees in journalism and political science from Boston University.

She has nearly 15 years of editorial experience in the publishing industry and serves as co-chair of the Council of Science Editors (CSE) marketing committee and as a member of the CSE Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA) and Professional Development committees. Her interests and skills include best practices, ethics in publishing, marketing and promotions, and content development and strategy. She is actively working towards her CSE Certificate in Publishing.
